Terraced vineyards of the Douro

Our Story

The Terroir
Narrative

Chapter I — The Land

Born of schist
& silence

The Douro Valley is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, where vines have been cultivated for over two thousand years. The terraces carved from schist rock are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — a testament to generations of labour and devotion.

Quinta da Formigosa sits on the right bank of the Douro River, just five kilometres from Pinhão, in the village of Chanceleiros. Here, the schist soils retain the day's heat and release it slowly through the night, creating the conditions for grapes of extraordinary intensity.

Chapter II — The Dream

A shared vision,
rooted in friendship

Acquired in 2015 by a group of friends from France and Switzerland, Quinta da Formigosa entered a new chapter shaped by a shared passion: to craft wines of exceptional caliber from this ancient terroir.

What began as a captivating journey through the Douro Valley soon became something more: an ambition to preserve a remarkable estate and bring together skilled professionals united by a common vision of excellence.

Chapter III — The Craft

Tradition as a starting point,
not a limit

The Douro has a strong identity — powerful, expressive, and unmistakable. We respect that legacy deeply. At the same time, we believe the region still has many stories left to tell.

Through constant research, small trials and careful observation, we explore ways to craft wines that are more elegant, balanced and precise, while remaining true to their origin. Tradition guides us; curiosity pushes us forward.

Chapter IV — The Commitment

Farming for today, tomorrow,
and beyond

We practice regenerative agriculture — an approach that goes beyond sustainability to actively restore the health of the land. We focus on encouraging biodiversity, and reducing intervention wherever possible.

Cover crops, minimal soil disturbance and thoughtful water management allow the soil microbiome to thrive. Healthier soils lead to healthier vines, and ultimately, to wines that better express their place.

In the winery, the same philosophy holds. We use the minimum amount of external products in every step of production — no unnecessary fining agents, no added colour, no artificial manipulation of flavour. The wine you drink is as close to the fruit and the land as we can make it.

Soil Health

Cover crops and composting rebuild organic matter and microbial life across every row.

Biodiversity

Native plants, insects, and birds are welcomed as partners in a balanced ecosystem.

No Additives

Minimal sulphites, no artificial fining, no added flavour enhancers. Just wine.

Full Traceability

Estate-grown grapes mean every decision — from pruning to pressing — is ours.
